I received this very interesting email today. It talks about marriage and gives reasons why NOT to get married. Now now... read before jumping to conclusions... This is for everyone.

You should probably not get married if...

This seemed note worthy...

A new sign in the Bank Lobby reads:

Customers using this new facility are requested to use the procedures outlined below when accessing their accounts.

FEMALE PROCEDURE:
Unfortunately, most of this part is the Truth.!!!!

  1. Drive up to cash machine.
  2. Reverse and back up the required amount to align car window with the machine.
  3. Set parking brake, put the window down.
  4. Find handbag, remove all contents on to passenger seat to locate card.
  5. Tell person on cell phone you will call them back and hang up.

Marriage??

Of late I have been sort of postponing the postings on the blog… No specific reason other than that I have been busy… (yeah yeah I KNOW old excuse and a big reason that nothing major was happening… AND maybe that A LOT of things were happening but I really didn’t wanna pour it all out on the blog…)sigh!!!!
There was a marriage in the family in the weekend… Sort of interesting. Hmmm Its amazing how after attending one of these dos everyone starts talking about doing things differently and what things to change or forego and what to keep… And I for that matter am no different than anyone else… : )
I have been planning for this moment for most of my life and most things have changed over the years but one thing has remained constant. I want something very simple. Those who know me also know that I am very simple and therefore this will not come as a surprise to many…
I see the hustle and bustle that accompanies each marriage and I get tired just by observing!!! I wonder how the others feel who are actually working hard on getting something accomplished… Whenever I talk about this the responses I get are :
Its tradition
It’s customary
It’s the way it was done and we should continue doing it…
Blah.. blah.. blah…

And I get more frustrated with each response… I mean we have the power to change whatever we want so why can’t we change the customs!!! Why continue doing things when no one knows what it’s about!! I have found that instead of the day being for the Bride and Groom it’s a day for showing off to relatives… It’s a matter of social standing and status!!!
There is something called “Kanya Daan” where the parents of the bride give away the bride to the groom. Well in the wedding I attended the bride’s mom, wasn’t allowed to do this. Reason – she is a widow. What crap!!! If someone had said something like that to my mum I would have refused to get married!!! I know that this is not always practiced but these things should have been discussed prior to the wedding… Talk about being hurtful!!!
As each day passes the notion of getting a pre-nuptial agreement sounds more and more appealing…
Have everything written and vetted before tying the knot!!! It’s just a thought anyway…
Frustrating as it was I love attending Indian weddings... It’s really colorful… And very meaningful… Meaningful to those who understand it that is : )

Rain Again!!!

Another weekend’s here and guess what!!! It’s raining… Again… Almost every weekend of late it has been pouring… And I thought Suva was bad : (
People have started saying that I brought the rain with me from Suva and then I start explaining that scientifically its just not possible etc etc… It sort of pinches me coz really from the time I moved it HAS been raining a lot!!! Maybe there is some truth in what my “People” say… And maybe pigs have started to fly too…
Anyways I am hoping to try to catch the Indian Cultural Trade Show that is currently being showcased in Lautoka. I tried to see it last week… yes in the rain!!! But no one was around. Even after advertising in the newspapers you would expect the show case to be there but nah… they had extended their stay in Suva… So will check that out… Other than this its all normal stuff for Saturday
My plans for Sunday:
  • Sleep in. (Hasn’t been possible so far coz Dads awake at the crack of dawn!!!)
  • Do gardening… Have to prune my plants coz they are out of shape right now, re-pot my cactus plants as they have started crowding and have started to look slightly peakish…
  • Play with my doggies… I’ll devote a couple of hours just to play with them and maybe bathe them… My doggies look forward to their bath time so much coz of all the massaging and grooming that comes with it… I’m trying to incorporate brushing their teeth into this but so far am unsuccessful : ( . They simply do not understand my lecture on dental hygiene and start growling as soon as I hold up a toothbrush!!! I am trying my people skills on them but no luck… Maybe their white gleaming fangs should give me a indication that no brushing is necessary… hmmm
Note:
Monday to Friday: All shops are open only between 8 a.m to 7 p.m
Saturday: The town is open till 2 p.m.
And Sunday is a holiday. It’s a day for rest and no retail shops are open on this day.

April Fool's

Interesting Read:

April Fools' Day, sometimes called All Fools' Day, is one of the most light hearted days of the year. Its origins are uncertain. Some see it as a celebration related to the turn of the seasons, while others believe it stems from the adoption of a new calendar.

New Year's Day Moves

Ancient cultures, including those as varied as the Romans and the Hindus, celebrated New Year's Day on or around April 1. It closely follows the vernal equinox (March 20th or March 21st.) In medieval times, much of Europe celebrated March 25, the Feast of Annunciation, as the beginning of the new year.
In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII ordered a new calendar (the Gregorian Calendar) to replace the old Julian Calendar. The new calendar called for New Year's Day to be celebrated Jan. 1. That year, France adopted the reformed calendar and shifted New Year's day to Jan. 1. According to a popular explanation, many people either refused to accept the new date, or did not learn about it, and continued to celebrate New Year's Day on April 1. Other people began to make fun of these traditionalists, sending them on "fool's errands" or trying to trick them into believing something false. Eventually, the practice spread throughout Europe.

Problems With This Explanation

There are at least two difficulties with this explanation. The first is that it doesn't fully account for the spread of April Fools' Day to other European countries. The Gregorian calendar was not adopted by England until 1752, for example, but April Fools' Day was already well established there by that point. The second is that we have no direct historical evidence for this explanation, only conjecture, and that conjecture appears to have been made more recently.

Constantine and Kugel

Another explanation of the origins of April Fools' Day was provided by Joseph Boskin, a professor of history at Boston University. He explained that the practice began during the reign of Constantine, when a group of court jesters and fools told the Roman emperor that they could do a better job of running the empire. Constantine, amused, allowed a jester named Kugel to be king for one day. Kugel passed an edict calling for absurdity on that day, and the custom became an annual event.
"In a way," explained Prof. Boskin, "it was a very serious day. In those times fools were really wise men. It was the role of jesters to put things in perspective with humor."
This explanation was brought to the public's attention in an Associated Press article printed by many newspapers in 1983. There was only one catch: Boskin made the whole thing up. It took a couple of weeks for the AP to realize that they'd been victims of an April Fools' joke themselves.

Spring Fever

It is worth noting that many different cultures have had days of foolishness around the start of April, give or take a couple of weeks. The Romans had a festival named Hilaria on March 25, rejoicing in the resurrection of Attis. The Hindu calendar has Holi, and the Jewish calendar has Purim. Perhaps there's something about the time of year, with its turn from winter to spring, that lends itself to lighthearted celebrations.

Observances Around the World

April Fools' Day is observed throughout the Western world. Practices include sending someone on a "fool's errand," looking for things that don't exist; playing pranks; and trying to get people to believe ridiculous things.
The French call April 1 Poisson d'Avril, or "April Fish." French children sometimes tape a picture of a fish on the back of their schoolmates, crying "Poisson d'Avril" when the prank is discovered.
Hmmm very very enlightening...
