Pills

The doctor who had been seeing an 80 -year-old woman for most of her life finally retired.
At her next checkup, the new doctor told her to bring a list of all the medicines that had been prescribed for her. As the young doctor was looking through these, his eyes grew wide as he realized she had a prescription for birth control pills.
Mrs Smith, do you realize these are BIRTH CONTROL pills.
Yes they help me to sleep at night.
Mrs. Smith, I assure you there is absolutely NOTHING in these that could possible help you sleep.
She reached out and patted the young Doctor's knee. Yes, dear.
I know that. But every morning, I grind one up and mix it in the glass of orange juice that my 16 year old granddaughter drinks. And believe me, it helps me sleep at night.

Life

Great men say, 'Life has to be an incessant process of repair and reconstruction, of discarding evil and developing goodness. In the journey of life, if you want to travel without fear, you must have the ticket of a good conscience.'

Playing with Words

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: 'I am blind, please help.' There were only a few coins in the hat.
A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.
Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, 'Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?'
The man said, 'I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way.'
What he had written was: 'Today is a beautiful day and I cannot see it.'
Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing?
Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?

Moral of the Story:
Be THANKFUL for what you have. Be CREATIVE. Be INNOVATIE. Think DIFFERENTLY and POSITIVELY.

08-08-08

I almost missed it.... Its happening alot lately. When I leave home I have a list of things to do but when I get home in the evening I didn't do half of it.... coz I either forgot all about it or I just didn't get around to it.

Today being 08-08-08 is very very special for me. Reasons :
  • I will not see another 08-08-08 in my lifetime - once in a lifetime thing.
  • Olympics - officially starts today :)
  • Its my friend - Niraj's Birthday today.... He will be 29 today :) Hope he celebrates the day with his Fiancee in India. They will be tying the knot or taking the plunge or getting married at the end of the year....
So yeah.... its a special day and I can't believe it that I was so close to missing out on posting today....

So Niraj if you do read this.... "Many many Happy Returns of The Day!!!! " Have fun....

Honorary Doctorate

Lately I have seen that many use the title of a Doctor when addressing someone who has been given an Honorary Ph.D. Is it ok to do so? I'm not so very sure so I did a bit of research... and this is what I found:

Source: Wikipedia
Recipients of an honorary doctorate do not normally adopt the title of "doctor". In many countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, it is not usual for an honorary doctor to use the formal title of "doctor", regardless of the background circumstances for the award.
I know of someone who was granted a Ph.D after proving that one of the articles published in a Scientific Journal was not "correct" and he wrote to the Journal with full explanations and after alot of "work" he was given a Doctorate BUT he never used it and infact is currently completing his Ph.D.

Well each to their own I guess....

Fifty Dollars!!!

Morris and his wife Esther went to the state fair every year, and every year Morris would say, 'Esther, I'd like to ride in that helicopter.'
Esther always replied, 'I know Morris, but that helicopter ride is fifty dollars, and fifty dollars is fifty dollars'
One year Esther and Morris went to the fair, and Morris said, 'Esther, I'm 85 years old. If I don't ride that helicopter, I might never get another chance.'
To this, Esther replied, 'Morris that helicopter ride is fifty dollars, and fifty dollars is fifty dollars.'
The pilot overheard the couple and said, 'Folks I'll make you a deal. I'll take the both of you for a ride If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and not say a word, I won't charge you! But if you say one word, it's fifty dollars.'
Morris and Esther agreed and up they went. The pilot did all kinds of fancy manoeuvres, but not a word was heard. He did his daredevil tricks over and over again, but still not a word.
When they landed, the pilot turned to Morris and said, 'By golly, I did everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn't. I'm impressed!'
Morris replied, 'Well, to tell you the truth, I almost said something when Esther fell out, but you know, fifty dollars is fifty dollars!'

Crabs - Fiji Style

Crustaceans are my favorite seafoods and living here in Fiji (we are surrounded by the sea/ocean) there is no shortage of crabs, mussels, prawns and lobsters. Lobsters and prawns are not so common a sight as are the crabs. Every day you'd find people selling bundles of crabs on the road side especially after 4.00 p.m.

Anyways this is how we make Crab Dish here in Fiji.

First Step -
Clean the Crabs really really thoroughly!!! We use a toothbrush to get to those "hard to reach places :)...

Second Step:-

Get the ingredients ready.
Ingredients
Onions
Currey Leaves
Chilli Garlic Paste
Fenugreek, sesame, fennel, mustard seeds
Coriander
Masala, Turmeric, Chilli Powder, Rice Flour
Salt to Taste

Saute the onions, chiili garlic paste, seeds, curry leaves until the onions turn transparent. Add the Masala, turmeric, chilli powder, rice flour, salt to taste. Lightly fry and then add your crabs.

After cooking the crabs for sometime add stock or just plain water to make the gravy.

It's yummy!!!! In fact it was so yummy that I forgot to take a picture after it was cooked :) Maybe next time.... ;)

Religious Weekend

The weekend was one big whirlpool of religious activities for us. Every year we have religious prayers at home. Its called "Sathya Narayan Katha" and last Saturday (2nd August) we had it at home.

Now even before we have this Pooja we have to do alot of other stuff as part of preparation.

First is spring cleaning (thoroughly cleaning the house and compound). This is what I call as preparation of the surrounding.

Next is becoming a Vegetarian for the duration. Preparation of self (spiritually)

Third is planning and preparing the menu for the day.

Fourth is confirming with the priest the time and date. (Here its ok if you have a family priest). They do not have problems with dates and timings.

Having the prayers, giving of alms and feeding the poor and needy is one way of finishing the days programme.

For me it was fun coz this is one of the activities that I can partake in with my family. Beautiful day.
